With so much talk about Happy Holidays vs. Merry Christmas, I thought it interesting that what is really going on is a very science based astronomical event called the Winter Solstice. The only significance that it holds is that during this event we experience the shortest length of time between the time the sun rises and the time the sun sets.

I snapped these images this morning as I scrambled out the door at 7 a.m. to position myself to be able to catch the sunrise. I was half asleep, stiff from my back issues, and my cameras had not been set up the night before. I got out there only to find the lens on my D7K wasn’t auto focusing, and my D700 wouldn’t fire because it had no memory card in it.

After expressing a few choice expletives, I manual focused the D7k, and ran inside to find a memory card for the D700. I recomposed myself and managed to fire off both cameras and captured a few beauties and a decisive moment or two.
