Holidays can be brutal for me because I am usually far from the people I love. This year I got to spend Christmas in New Mexico  with my daughter, son-in-law,  and two grand daughters. For me it is always very special to be with them, but it was especially nice to be there during the holiday season.  Healthy family relationships are something I’ve always wished for.  I am very happy to see my daughter in a loving marriage and enjoying a  happy home life. So, it was very sweet news , and the best present ever, to hear that my daughter and son-in-law are expecting a baby due to arrive in August. Needless to say we are all thrilled!

Big Sisters

We didn’t have a lot of down time due to my daughter and son-in-law’s work schedules. Yet, it was great hanging out with my granddaughters. We spent days just doing routine things like de-cluttering their bedrooms, organizing their closets, going Christmas shopping, and helping to prepare Christmas dinner. We prepped for Christmas by decorating our own wrapping paper for the gifts they picked out for their parents, and we wrapped the stocking stuffers. We chopped garlic, onion, herbs, and vegetables for the turkey rub and side dishes, and baked cookies for Santa. I even visited school with the girls before they went on Winter Break.

It was Ella’s crazy pajama day at school, and  Mallory received her student of the week award at morning assembly. I felt grateful to be there for both of them! Little did I know, that their parents were at a doctor appointment confirming  our new arrival.

In the image below, Mallory just received her award and is  walking back to her group. She has a pink school bag on her shoulder and the award in her hand.

Albuquerque provides a wonderful background for photos. The lapis lazuli skies, red desert clay, and the muted colors of the vegetation are a soothing contrast against the occasional evergreen.

. . . and despite the brisk cold snap in the air, I am warmed by  sunsets that seem to set the sky on fire.

Then there is Thor, a great big dog that thinks he is a lap dog. He loves to curl up on a small chair with his favorite forbidden pillow. . .

. . . for me these small pleasures are what living should be about.
